Albese con Cassano

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,164 · Postal code: 22032

Albese and Cassano spent four and a half centuries separating and coming back together. They were a single commune until the seventh of August 1469, when they were made independent; in 1807 Albese took Cassano back; in 1812 both ended up inside Vill'Albese, of which they became hamlets; in 1816 the Austrians reconstituted them separately; and only the royal decree of 1928 joined them for good. The coat of arms granted in 1980 records the fact honestly: the shield is divided vertically, and that line is there precisely to keep apart the two villages that make up the commune.

Four thousand one hundred and sixty-four inhabitants in the province of Como, in the upper Brianza, on moraine ground left by the same glacier that carved out the lake. The arms also carry silkworm cocoons, for the sericulture and the Pontiggia mill that worked silk at Cassano in the late nineteenth century. The church of San Pietro is Romanesque, of the eleventh century, and its bell tower leans. In 2004 an ethnographic and water museum was opened in an old disused washhouse: the place where clothes were washed was also the place where people talked, sang and told each other about the day's labours.
