Capiago and Intimiano were for centuries two villages that looked in opposite directions. In the age of the communes Capiago was the first of the Como communes to side with Frederick Barbarossa, Intimiano the last that remained within the orbit of Milan, as much for its civil government as for its church. The break has outlived the merger: to this day Capiago belongs to the diocese of Como and follows the Roman rite, Intimiano to the archdiocese of Milan and follows the Ambrosian one.
The two comuni were put together in 1928 because they had too few inhabitants, and the new comune was called Salvadera; the double name arrived only the year after. The town hall was placed along the straight road that joins the two old centres, that is, exactly halfway between them. The name of Capiago comes instead from its first settlement, a lazaretto: the house of sores, cà di piàgh in dialect. And the dialect also keeps the nicknames the two villages gave each other: the people of Intimiano are the rats, those of Capiago the oxen.
