Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Calvatone, a municipality of 1,260 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint Blaise; the Riserva naturale Le Bine is in its territory.
In 1836 some farm labourers working the fields found a head of gilded bronze; the landowner urged them to keep looking, and out came the body, the globe and an arm. It was a Roman statue over a metre and a half tall, sold to Berlin in 1841 and exhibited there as the Victory of Calvatone.
Then it was lost: hidden during the war, given up as missing in 1945, it ended up in Russia and was catalogued by mistake as a seventeenth-century French sculpture, shut away in a store of the Hermitage. It has only recently been recognised and restored, and the wings turned out to be a modern addition: perhaps it is not a Victory but a Diana. Nearby, in the year 69, the two battles of Bedriacum were fought.
