Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Ambrose
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Tornata celebrates its patrons Saint Anthony the Abbot and Saint Ambrose, to whom the same church of the town is dedicated.
Tornata had two churches and has ended up keeping one, with both names. The church of Sant'Ambrogio stood outside the built-up area and was inconvenient for the faithful; that of Sant'Antonio had been born as the private oratory of the Sommi house, later passed to the Ripari, and in 1675 it was that one that was raised to parish church. Since then it has been called the church of Sant'Antonio Abate and Sant'Ambrogio Vescovo, and the feast falls on 17 January. It has a gabled front of bare brick with pinnacles, a rose window and a four-square bell tower, and inside, in a single nave with four chapels, a thirteenth-century fresco of the Madonna and Child, a polyptych by Bernardino Dehò and a wooden statue of the eighteenth century. In 1929 it was made over because of damp.
The same story repeats itself in the hamlet. Romprezzagno was a fief of the Bellotti, who built themselves a family oratory full of old frescoes, and that too ended up becoming a parish church: in this comune, in short, both churches were born as the private chapels of a family. The name of the hamlet, on the other hand, tells of a clearing: it was Runcus Petri Johannis in the eleventh century, the clearing of Peter son of John, then Roncho Prezanni, and at last Romprezzagno. The arms of the comune, granted in 2005, are quartered with two lions, sheaves of wheat and a bunch of grapes: the flat countryside of the Cremonese, which is what has always been here.
