Feast of Saint Pancras
📅 Every year, on 11 May
On 11 May Campagnola Cremasca, a municipality of 683 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint Pancras, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The village has had two names, and both are documents. In a bull of pope Alexander the Third of 1178 it appears as San Pancrazio, after its patron saint; the name it bears today was born instead out of work, because in 1123 the village passed to the Benedictines, who drained land kept marshy by the waters of the roggia Rino, and the fields made fit for wheat gave the place the name Campagnola. In 1862 the municipality added Cremasca so as not to be confused with other places of the same name; in 1927 it was suppressed and joined to Cremosano, and it regained its autonomy in 1953.
Between 1407 and 1410 Giorgio Benzoni had watchtowers built in the villages around Crema, and Campagnola had one of its own. When the Benzoni lordship ended the tower lost its purpose and was let out to private users, until in 1565 the general council of Crema authorised the demolition of those towers and the sale of the land they stood on, to raise money for the better defence of the city: they pulled down the defences to pay for the defence. Of Campagnola's tower nothing survives but the name of a farmstead, Cascina Torre. In the parish church hangs a Saint Francis by Bernardo Strozzi.
