Cremosano

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,580 · Postal code: 26010

The monastery that gave rise to Cremosano is still there, but families live inside it. Around the year 1000 the Benedictine monks, exploring the marshes of the Moso, found a fertile patch, drained it and built a monastery there; in time it became a stopping place for the merchants coming up from the south towards Milan. Later it was converted into a farmstead, and today it can be seen along the provincial road that crosses the village: it is a house in which several families live.

Something of those monks survives in the coat of arms too. In the first half there is a mount of six hills with the word PAX above it and a Calvary cross: it is the Benedictine emblem, and it says where the village came from. In the second there is an ox grazing on a green field, and it says what the village lived on. In between, history brought the plague twice: once around 1200 and again in the seventeenth century; at the end of the latter a chapel was built where the survivors prayed for the sick to be saved.
