Grumello Cremonese ed Uniti

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,873 · Postal code: 26023

The name of this comune is its administrative history set out in a row. First it was simply Grumello; in 1810 Farfengo, Fengo and Zanengo were joined to it and it became Grumello con Farfengo; in 1862 it added «Cremonese» to distinguish itself from the other Grumellos of Italy; in 1867 it took in Zanengo as well; and since 1915 it has been called Grumello Cremonese ed Uniti. The «united» ones are precisely the villages it had absorbed along the way.

The land here is flat, but it has hollows: they are what is left of the lago Gerundo, the sheet of water formed by the floods of the Adda and later vanished. On the coat of arms, granted in 1928, there are a chequered band, a lion at the base and a dragon in the chief. The via Regina passed through here, the Roman road that climbed from the river port of Cremona to Chiavenna by way of Milan; and from 1926 to 1956 Farfengo and Grumello had a train too, on the Cremona-Iseo line.
