Cappella Cantone

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 577 · Postal code: 26020

Cappella Cantone is a scattered comune, and the first thing to say is that the town hall stands in neither of the places that give the comune its name: the seat of the council is at Santa Maria dei Sabbioni, while the two other nuclei are Cappelle, a kilometre and a half further south, and Oscasale, a kilometre further north. Three small villages a short way from one another, in the central-western part of the province of Cremona, some twenty kilometres from the provincial capital. The foundation goes back to Roman times: it was a small farming borgo called Cappa, crossed by an important Roman road, the via Regina.

The administrative history of Oscasale explains how one arrives at a situation like this. It was a farming village of ancient origin in the Contado of Cremona, and in the mid-seventeen hundreds it counted three hundred and five inhabitants. In the Napoleonic age, from 1809 to 1816, it was demoted to a hamlet of San Bassano, and it recovered its autonomy with the constitution of the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom; then, in 1842, it was the Austrian rulers who decided to suppress the comune of Oscasale, annexing it to Cappella Cantone. It is the same rhythm that in those same years fell upon Castelnovate, on the Ticino: the French merge, the Austrians of 1816 give back, and then somebody takes away again, this time for good. The arms and the banner of the comune were granted in 2001.
