Paderno Ponchielli

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,480 · Postal code: 26024

In less than a century this village changed its name four times. Originally it was simply Paderno, from the Latin prædium Paterni, «Paternus's farm». After the unification of Italy it had to be told apart from the other Padernos in the Kingdom, and in 1862 a royal decree christened it Paderno Fasolaro, after the widespread growing of the black-eyed bean, which here is called fasöla: the people did not like the name, and in 1878 it was replaced with Paderno Cremonese. In 1928, with the merging of the neighbouring comune of Ossolaro, it became Paderno Ossolaro. The final name arrived only in 1950, with a decree of president Einaudi, and it is that of a man born here on 31 August 1834: Amilcare Ponchielli. The municipal motto translates as «Amilcare, my illustrious son».

The house in the old centre where Ponchielli was born is today the museum devoted to him, recognised by the Region: there are manuscripts, original scores, opera libretti, musical instruments, photographs and relics, with a specialised library and an audiovisual archive of performances of his works. In the church of San Dalmazio, which is the parish church, the historic organ is still played during the events named after him. The comune, for that matter, grew by absorbing its neighbours: in 1841 the suppressed comune of San Gervaso, in 1867 that of Acqualunga Badona and in 1928 Ossolaro.
