Offanengo is a municipality of 5,869 people in the province of Cremona, Lombardy, about 5 kilometres from Crema, between 76 and 87 metres above sea level. The name, of Lombard origin, combines a root such as au, denoting a raised mound, with a suffix such as engo, tied to the surrounding running water: the settlement would have stood on mounds ringed by watercourses.
Before the Lombards, the area held two separate mounds: Offanengo Maggiore, with the church of Santa Maria della Purificazione, and Offanengo Minore, with that of San Lorenzo. Its later history is uncertain, but a book records intermediate forms between an older Obeningo, recorded from 905, and Offenengo, appearing from 999. Founded in the eighties from a tool collection gathered by the local middle school, the Museum of Rural Life now holds about 400 pieces of farm work, crafts and cascina life.
