Saint John the Baptist and Saint Blaise, patrons of Romanengo
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of October
Romanengo celebrates Saint John the Baptist and Saint Blaise on the first Sunday of October, in the church dedicated to them.
On the evening of the eleventh of May 1802 the water level dropped in the wells of the area and a smell of sulphur was noticed; a first shock was felt around six. The next morning, about half past nine, the strong one came: the earthquake of the Oglio valley, with its epicentre near Soncino, struck a score of villages and was felt as far as Lodi, Cremona and Brescia. At Romanengo the parish church collapsed, and a few years later had to be rebuilt from scratch: the church of Santi Giovanni Battista e Biagio you see today is the daughter of that morning. The shocks went on until the twenty-fourth of June.
The village stands on the pianalto of Romanengo, a raised shelf in the middle of the plain, in a country of resurgence springs: together with Casaletto di Sopra and Ticengo it forms the Lombard Union of the Fontanili municipalities, and the territory is crossed by the Naviglio della Melotta, today a nature reserve. Between 1880 and 1931 the Lodi-Crema-Soncino tramway passed here, with a stop in the village. Three thousand and twenty-one inhabitants in the province of Cremona.
