The Serio changed its course, and left everything on the wrong side. Between the eleventh and the fourteenth century the river shifted, and the village grown up around the church of Sant'Imerio found itself having to add the word old to its name, to tell itself apart from the settlement born opposite, on the other bank: it is Ripalta Vecchia, today the only hamlet of Madignano, joined to the municipality by royal decree in 1868. The church of Santa Maria del Marzale too, which Vinizzone di Rivoltella had built on the right bank of the Serio, suddenly found itself on the left, at the tip of a narrow tongue of land: its bell tower ended up serving as a watchtower.

That bell tower today looks too big for the church, and there is a reason: an exceptional flood of the Serio, at some time before 1580, brought down part of the building. At the Marzale, between the twenty-first and the twenty-second of October 1202, a truce was signed between Crema and Cremona, the first attempt at reconciliation between the two communes; in 1403 Guelphs and Ghibellines fought thereabouts, and the fallen were buried under the square in front of the church. Two thousand nine hundred and thirty-one inhabitants in the province of Cremona.

Saint Peter in Chains and the Marzale Fair

📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of August

In Madignano, Saint Peter in Chains is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. The Fiera del Marzale, of 18th-century origin, grew out of the Easter Resurrection celebrations.
