Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Izano celebrates its patron Saint Blaise, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Pallavicina stands in its territory.
In 1900 the church of San Biagio was rebuilt from top to bottom and its orientation was turned round: where the façade had been they put the apse, and the other way about. The result is that the eighteenth-century cemetery, built right in front of the façade so that people could pass easily from one to the other, found itself behind the church. It is worth the visit all the same: a rectangular enclosure with a chapel at the far end and a portico frescoed with the Stations of the Cross, one of the very few old cemeteries left in the Crema countryside.
Izano appears in documents as early as the end of the tenth century, under the name of Giosano, and from then on its fate has been tied to Crema. From here, though, came a family that made its way elsewhere: the Giosani, settled in Cremona, and in particular Gerardo da Iosano, who at the end of the thirteenth century was podestà and captain of the people in various cities of northern and central Italy. In the oratory of San Rocco, meanwhile, a fresco dated 1471 survives.
