Ripalta Guerina

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 535 · Postal code: 26010

Ripalta Guerina is all flat but for one cut. The territory is small and even, a little above seventy metres over the sea, and the only relief is a negative one: to the east the Serio has dug its own valley more than twelve metres below the level of the fields, with a steep scarp edge. To the west the border with Moscazzano is marked by the roggia Comuna. A single provincial road crosses the comune, the old Cremasca that joins Bergamo to Codogno. In the dialect of Crema the village is called Riultelina.

At the entrance to the village stands the villa that the marquis Monticelli had built in the 18th century: several blocks, farm buildings, a sober façade with a balcony at the centre and a portico beside it. It is the villa where Arturo Toscanini came on holiday, and today part of it has become a restaurant. Inside it, and in the village around, Francesco Maselli shot Gli sbandati. The parish church of San Gottardo owes its neoclassical shape to a partial rebuilding of 1814, wanted by the parish priest Carlo Confortini; the inside was decorated by Angelo Ogliari, and among the canvases is the series of the Via Crucis.
