Credera and Rubbiano are two farming villages of the Crema country that for a century looked in different directions. In 1807 Napoleon attached them to two different comuni — Credera to Moscazzano, Rubbiano to Casaletto Ceredano — and both regained their autonomy in 1816, with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. At the unification of Italy Credera had 894 inhabitants and Rubbiano 605; in 1868 Credera also took in the comune of Rovereto. Only in 1928 were the two merged with each other, and Credera Rubbiano was born.
Of the comune there remain the two churches of the two villages: San Donnino at Credera and Santa Maria Maddalena at Rubbiano, each at the centre of its own settlement, which have stayed distinct even after the merger. Credera stands at seventy metres above sea level, Rubbiano at sixty: on the plain, the difference between the two is all there. Around them are the fields and the provincial roads that lead to Crema, to Montodine, to Casaletto Ceredano. And in February 2025 Credera was declared the most liveable village in Italy.
