Voltido — Vultéed in the Cremona dialect — lies in the plain east of Cremona, between Piadena and Torre de' Picenardi, and is one of the smallest comuni in the province: by number of residents it is the third from the bottom. The area was probably already inhabited in Roman times; before the year one thousand the territory was under the jurisdiction of the bishopric of Cremona, which assigned it to the monastery of San Lorenzo, and in the following centuries it passed from fief to fief: first to the Sanseverino, then to the princes of Stigliano, and finally to the Araldi. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo has the look given to it by a rebuilding of the late nineteenth century.
The comune, though, is made of pieces that were once separate. Recorfano was an autonomous comune until the royal decree of the thirtieth of December 1867, which joined it to Voltido; then there is the locality of Gattarolo Cappellino. What holds it all together is the countryside: the farmsteads and the rural buildings of the Cremona plain, the fields, the roads that run from one settlement to the next without rising a single metre. The coat of arms and the gonfalon were granted in 1952.
