Feast of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr

On 26 December Solarolo Rainerio celebrates Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, patron together with Saint Nicholas of Tolentino; the town preserves Villa Zanetti.
The story of this village of the plain can be read well in the story of its tramway. In 1879 the Casa Levi of Turin proposed to the provincial administration of Cremona to build and run a tram line linking the provincial capital to San Giovanni in Croce along the route of the strada giuseppina: the proposal came to nothing. In 1881 the Corriere di Cremona revived interest, the provincial council discussed it in its session of 6 September, and a branch towards Casalmaggiore was considered, provided the comuni concerned agreed; but the Casa Levi soon ran into financial trouble and did not honour its commitment. In 1883 the plan was reshaped by the Provincial Deputation: the main line would be the Cremona to Casalmaggiore one, and from Ca' de Soresini a short branch would run off to San Giovanni in Croce.
It was on that branch that, from 1888, Solarolo Rainerio had its own stop. The service lasted exactly forty years: in 1928 the branch closed, while the main line to Casalmaggiore went on until 1954, operated in the end by the company Tramvie Provinciali Cremonesi. Since then the village has gone back to being what it was before, a small comune of the Cremona plain between Piadena, Gussola and San Giovanni in Croce, with its fields and its farmsteads. The coat of arms and the gonfalon were granted in 1983 — the gonfalon is a cloth party per pale yellow and blue — and since 1965 the village has had a municipal library.
