Feast of Saint Benedict
📅 Every year, on 11 July
On 11 July Trigolo, a municipality of 1,760 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint Benedict (San Benedetto).
Trigolo is a fortified borough without a castle. First named in 919, when it was assigned to the Carolingian vavasour Ambrogione de Trigulo, it later found itself on the disputed boundary between Cremona and Crema, and Cremona treated it as an outpost: the defensive tower was completed in 1190 by the local lord Otto di Roglerio, under an obligation imposed by the Comune of Cremona. Around it came a square ring of walls and a moat, and at the centre a donjon. Never a proper castle: only a village shut in.
Under the Visconti that position won Trigolo the rank of podesteria, with a podestà appointed by the duke every two years; but the land yielded little, and in 1538 the feudal lord Francesco Sfondrati handed back to Spain the territory he had bought of it, acknowledging that it was not worth the outlay. The petitions of the people of Trigolo against taxes, famines and plague are still in the State Archive of Milan. In 1849 Arsenio Migliavacca was born here, the Capuchin known as Arsenio da Trigolo, beatified in 2017. And from above, over the fields, the Roman centuriation can still be made out.
