Soresina

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,995 · Postal code: 26015

Soresina is said to have grown on one of the islets of Lake Gerundo, the marsh that once covered this part of the Cremona plain. The name has no agreed explanation: bishop San Siro, the paved road Silicina between Crema and Cremona, the raised site, or the cry of the only woman who survived a plague. It is that last, popular version that ended up in the town arms: a woman crowned in gold holding a small castle and a silver ribbon reading Sol Regina.

No trace of that castle has ever been found on the ground. Crema and Cremona fought over the town until the emperor Lothar had it levelled between 1133 and 1136 to end the quarrel; rebuilt, it was razed again in 1217. The detached bell tower of San Siro holds a peal of twelve bells, among the largest in Lombardy. The commune received a bronze medal of merit for the Calabrian and Sicilian earthquake and, in 1962, the title of city.
