On 8 July Fiesco, a municipality of 1,200 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint Procopius (San Procopio).
In February 2018 Castelleone began the procedure to absorb Fiesco, and on the first of July both municipalities voted. At Castelleone the yes went above ninety per cent of those voting; at Fiesco almost sixty per cent said no, and the merger was annulled. A village of twelve hundred people chose to remain a village of twelve hundred people.
The countryside around lives on governed water. Just beyond the boundary, at Salvirola, runs the Vacchelli canal, pushed through by the Cremonese senator Pietro Vacchelli and dug between 1887 and 1892 by the Consorzio irrigazioni cremonesi: thirty-five kilometres, almost all of them straight, carrying the water of the Adda to eighty thousand hectares of plain. It is there, at Salvirola, that the canal splits into two branches.
