Feast of Saint George the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Cumignano sul Naviglio, a municipality of 447 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron Saint George the Martyr, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The second half of the name is a canal. Until 1862 the village was simply Cumignano; then a royal decree of 4 December of that year added «sul Naviglio», that is, the Naviglio Civico of Cremona, which passes here. That canal exists because in 1329 the city obtained from Louis of Bavaria the privilege of drawing water from the Oglio, and from 1337 the network descending from it was dug: channels, ditches and outlets that have irrigated this countryside ever since and that remain the backbone of Cremona's farming. In a place where the ground is all the same and flat, the difference between a field that yields and one that does not is made by water, and here the water comes from there.
The village itself is small and old. In 1451 Cumignano appears, together with Formigara, among the lands that count Giacomazzo of Salerno held in the Cremona country; it is then cited among the comuni of the Contado of Cremona in 1562 and again in 1634. In 1859, when the Lombard provinces passed to the kingdom of Sardinia, it counted seven hundred and ninety-two inhabitants and was put in the district of Soncino: today it does not reach half that figure. The parish church, dedicated to Saint George martyr, is recent instead: it was built between 1948 and 1953. Around it are Soncino and Soresina, and in between the fields.
