Barzanò

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,171 · Postal code: 23891

The name of Barzanò preserves that of a Roman family. Two votive altars dedicated to Jupiter Summanus, dated to the third or fourth century, bear the name of Novellianus Pandarus, a wealthy landowner; and it was thanks to him and his descendants that the place kept the title of Villa Barzanorum even through the barbarian invasions. To him is also attributed the fact that pagan worship lasted here almost to the end of the fourth century.

The first document that names the village is a diploma of 1015: the emperor Henry II granted the court of Barzanò to Alberico, bishop of Como, after confiscating it from two rebels, Ugo and Berengario, sons of count Sigifredo. Of the castle that stood on the hill only a keep remains, absorbed into a villa: in 1222 the Milanese army is said to have destroyed it, and in 1860 the remains of the walls came to light, two and a half braccia thick, with a double gate of which the outer one was a drawbridge.
