Cremella lost its own comune twice, and twice took it back: annexed to Barzanò in 1809 and again in 1928, it became autonomous once more in 1816 and then in 1953. The centre of everything, though, for eight centuries was not the town hall but a monastery: the Benedictine nuns of San Pietro, whom a diploma of Berengar of 920 names together with the «court» of Cremella, when the whole territory is granted to the basilica of San Giovanni in Monza. The convent lasted until the eighteenth century, even though as early as the sixteenth Carlo Borromeo had made it clear he wanted it suppressed.

That monastery is today the parish church of Saints Sisinius, Martyrius and Alexander: a Romanesque bell tower and, inside, Romanesque capitals carved with animals and a sixteenth-century Crucifixion. Of the name, on the other hand, nothing is certain: one explanation derives it from «burnt apple», because of an old apple orchard in the area. The trade was brought by the Umiliati, who had a house here and taught the working of wool; the castle, by contrast, began to decay in the thirteenth century and was already a ruin in the fifteenth.
