Primaluna

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,187 · Postal code: 23819

Primaluna's name has three explanations, and the village, forced to choose, has put its verdict on the coat of arms. The first is Primum Lumen, the first light of Christianity in the Valsassina, and it leans on a funerary stone recalling a certain Flora who died on 25 April 495. The second says the village stands facing the arc of moon drawn by the Grigne peaks. The third tells of Martino della Torre, known as the Giant, killed beneath Damascus, and of the crescent flag torn from the enemy and carried up here by the survivors.

On the municipal arms there is the crescent, together with the tower and the French lilies of the Della Torre, the lords of Milan who held here the fortified village that was capital of their county. But Primaluna also keeps a date that no etymology can sweeten: on 15 November 1762, towards seven in the evening, a mile of mountain broke away above the hamlet of Gero and buried houses, livestock and one hundred and fifteen people.
