Introbio

Iron made Introbio. There was plenty of it in the Valsassina, and the furnaces were here: one on the Troggia and one in the valley of the Acquaduro. In 1745 a descendant of the feudal lord Giulio Monti had the forge and blast furnace enlarged, and out of them came the nails and hinges used to build the Teatro alla Scala. In 1808 seven mines were working in the village, and one of the valley's three foundries; then the technology fell behind and everything shrank. In 1897 a private citizen, Carlo Arrigoni, asked to take over the fishing in the village's three streams: the comune said no.

About the name, on the other hand, nobody has ever agreed. Some derive it from inter vias, «between the roads», or from in trivio, the crossroads — and Introbio was indeed the junction of the mountain roads; some from in Trobio, from the Latin for turbid, like the streams Trobio and Troggia; some from the Veronese intròl, a path; some from intra, the thing that lies in the middle, because the village is inside the Valsassina. The water, at any rate, is what has lasted: at Daggio, at 1935 metres, there is the highest spring in Europe after the Sant'Anna di Vinadio one.
