Bulciago

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,948 · Postal code: 23892

Almost all municipal arms tell of the local lords; those of Bulciago tell of the workers. They were designed in 1965, and the brief explains it without circumlocution: the golden cogwheel stands for the industries that arose in the village, which bring well-being to the workforce employed in them; the silver band beneath the wheel is the road network, the ways linking Bulciago to the neighbouring centres; the blue border recalls the Lambro that runs close by. In those years the municipality measured about two hundred and seventy hectares, with cereals, hay, timber and works for weaving.

The name, on the other hand, is very old: it comes from the Lepontic bolgiakon, which means village of the cushion, on account of the gentle rises the village sits on. The first attestation of the court of Bulciago is of 920, when Berengar of Friuli entrusted it in commendam to the Chapter of Monza cathedral. At Bulciaghetto, at the top of a crossroads, stands the church of Santo Stefano, which by its structure is dated to the Carolingian age. A man of Bulciago, Eligio Panzeri, took part in the Expedition of the Thousand. Two thousand nine hundred and forty-eight inhabitants in the province of Lecco.
