Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven, patron of the Camisasca Tower
📅 Every year, on 15 August
Costa Masnaga celebrates Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven on 15 August, in the church dedicated to her.
Today's comune came into being in 1870 by putting four villages together, and each of them had its own defence. At Camisasca the tower still stands, raised around the year one thousand by families of Lombard descent, probably as a shelter from the raids of the Hungarians; at Brenno a medieval tower and a fortified farmhouse remain; at Centemero all that is left of the stronghold is the name of a courtyard. Tregolo had grown up around a castle, which in 1556 was pulled down by order of Charles V.
The remains of that castle now stand in the park of Villa Beretta, which in 1946 its owner made over to the nursing sisters of the Addolorata and which has become a health facility. The village, meanwhile, had taken another road: first silk, then cotton and other fibres, with mills that grew until they became the main wealth of the place — so much so that Costa Masnaga was given the title of City of Textiles.
