Vercurago

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,833 · Postal code: 23808

The castle that dominates Vercurago is that of the Unnamed, the nameless character of The Betrothed: Alessandro Manzoni took from here the setting of several chapters, and ever since the place has borne the name of a man who never existed. The castle, however, was a very serious matter: for more than three centuries it marked the border between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice, to which the village passed in 1454.

Vercurago fits into little more than two square kilometres and is one of the least extensive municipalities in Italy, squeezed between Monte Mudarga and the lake of Garlate. It appears for the first time in the will of the Lombard nobleman Rotprando, drawn up on the third of March 814: left without heirs, he gave most of his goods to the basilica of Sant'Ambrogio and allowed a certain Punno to buy some lands, among them the village of Vercoriaco. In the sixteenth century Saint Girolamo Emiliani established his congregation in the hamlet of Somasca, where after his death the sanctuary and the Sacro Monte arose. Two thousand eight hundred and thirty-three inhabitants in the province of Lecco.
