Valgreghentino

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,410 · Postal code: 23857

Biglio and Dozio have been annexed twice. The first time in 1809, when the municipality's population jumped to eight hundred and sixty-eight inhabitants; then they went their own way again, and were joined once more in 1927, bringing the total to nearly two thousand. The village, for that matter, has also changed its own name: for centuries it was simply Greghentino, and the Val in front came later. The name comes from the torrent that runs down to the Adda, and the torrent from its whirlpools: gorgant, the eddy of the stream.

In 1566 Charles Borromeo, having just taken possession of the diocese of Milan, raised to parish status the church of San Gregorio, built in the early fourteenth century. At Dozio there is instead a church of medieval origin dedicated at first to Saint Martin and today to the Black Madonna of Częstochowa. In the territory the washhouses of Biglio Superiore, Dozio and Ospedaletto still stand. Three thousand four hundred and ten inhabitants in the province of Lecco, on wooded hills some ten kilometres south of the provincial capital.
