At Villa Arese, in Osnago, Ugo Foscolo composed for the countess of the house his ode All'amica risanata; later, in the years when he was studying at Merate, Alessandro Manzoni stayed in the same villa. The building is of the seventeenth century, the work of the Richini, and it absorbed an older palace; the neoclassical front one sees today was added in the nineteenth century. In the chapel, open to the public since the sixteen hundreds, there is a Passion frescoed by Johann Christoph Storer.

The name of the village used to be explained by os lacus, "mouth of the lake", and a stretch of water was imagined that would have reached the neighbouring villages too; more recent studies derive it instead from the Celtic, in the sense of "place of the ash trees". Another villa in the village, the Ambrosini-Spinella, is attributed to Ulisse Stacchini, the architect who in Milan designed the Central Station and the San Siro stadium.
