Saint Alexander, patron of Robbiate

Robbiate celebrates Saint Alexander on 26 August, in the church dedicated to him.
Robbiate sits in the Meratese, in north-eastern Brianza, on morainic hills dropping to the Adda, which runs here at the bottom of a gorge and divides Lecco province from Bergamo. The name first appears in an exchange deed of 966, held in the State Archive of Milan, which names the vico et fundo Robiate; its origin is uncertain, perhaps the hill above the village, Monte Robbio, read as red mountain after the reddish clay of the soil.
Vines grew on that hill, and their wine, Monterobbio, reached the verses of Carlo Porta; in a piece about the village don Alessandro Villa nonetheless called it the least showy around, pressed against the slopes of Monterobbio and hidden in the shade of its vineyards. In 1928 the comune absorbed Paderno d'Adda and Imbersago and changed its name twice, to Robbiate Paderno and then Paderno Robbiate, until both broke away again after the war. The rationalist architect Franco Albini was born here.
