Feast of Saint Victor the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 8 May
On 8 May Esino Lario, a municipality of 750 inhabitants in the province of Lecco, celebrates its patron Saint Victor the Martyr, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The comune was born in 1927 from the merger of Esino Inferiore and Esino Superiore, and the village is still two. Its woods, however, have never been divided: Esino belonged to the «squadra dei monti», the group of Grigne villages that supplied charcoal for the iron of the Valsassina, and managing the woodland as a common good is its peculiarity compared with the neighbouring places. The woods still belong to the comune, their use is shared out among the residents, and in part they pass on by hereditary right.
Tourism here was born out of fossils: at the end of the nineteenth century geologists came up drawn by the marine deposits of the Grigne, and abbot Antonio Stoppani devoted a monograph in French to those of Esino. Above the village opens the Moncodeno, an amphitheatre with almost five hundred caves, one of which keeps underground ice. The caves also produced a legend: the Cavrè Sbàgiolè, half bird and half goat, which came out at night bleating with a human voice in search of those not right with their conscience. The fear was such that the windows of the houses were made very small and barred with an iron cross set into the wall.
