At Prato San Pietro there is a bell tower in the middle of the road: the church of Santa Maria Maddalena was demolished to let the traffic through, but the bell tower stayed, and today it serves as a traffic island between two carriageways. Leonardo da Vinci passed this way and noted the place in the Codex Atlanticus.

Iron was smelted here, and two families, the Fondra and the Mornico, fought over control of the furnaces: the cogwheel on the town's coat of arms comes from that. In December 2002 a landslide destroyed much of the hamlet of Bindo; it took years, but the hamlet was rebuilt and in 2009 the road came back, running through a tunnel.
