Iron was worked here, and the men who worked it had come from the Valle di Scalve. When that trade fell into crisis in the second half of the seventeenth century, Pagnona and the whole Valvarrone emptied: people left above all for Venice. The parish church of Sant'Andrea, though, was adorned for centuries with the money the emigrants sent home.

The arms are a map: the tower on the height is the fortress that closed the entrance of the valley, behind it run the torrents Varrone and Varroncello, and the star is Monte Legnone standing over the village. In the village there are seventeenth-century houses with frescoes on their fronts, a fourteenth-century tower, and the chapel built for the plague dead of 1630.
