Our Lady of the Assumption and the Ponte di Paderno
📅 Every year, on 15 August
Paderno d'Adda celebrates Our Lady of the Assumption on 15 August, in the church dedicated to her.
The San Michele bridge, built between 1887 and 1889 by the Savigliano works under the direction of the Swiss engineer Julius Rothlisberger, is 266 metres long and stands about 85 metres above the Adda. Its peculiarity is that it carries two things at once: the Seregno-Bergamo railway runs inside the truss, and the road runs along the top. The metal arch has a span of 150 metres and rests on nine supports. It is the kind of iron structure that at the end of the nineteenth century looked like a promise of the future, and that still does the same job today.
Three thousand eight hundred and eighty-one inhabitants in the province of Lecco, inside the Parco Adda Nord. Here the river has rapids that for centuries prevented navigation: Leonardo da Vinci designed a system of locks to get past them, the work stopped at the death of Ludovico il Moro, was resumed only in 1574 and was completed in the eighteenth century with the Naviglio di Paderno, which at last linked Lake Como to Milan by way of the Martesana. Enzo Bearzot is buried in the village cemetery.
