Calusco d'Adda

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,233 · Postal code: 24033

Tradition has a Roman soldier, Fidelis, pass through in the third century, on the run for turning Christian: he is said to have set a cross where a pagan idol stood, and there rose the church that took his name. The village enters a document in 871. The old parish church of San Fedele, enlarged many times between the eleventh century and the seventeenth, is now deconsecrated and serves as a civic building, still holding frescoes by Antonio Cifrondi.

Over the gorge of the Adda runs the Ponte San Michele, an iron arch riveted throughout without a single weld, joining Calusco and Paderno d'Adda: the railway below, the road above, the deck eighty-five metres up, on one span with no support in the river. At its building it was the largest arch bridge in the world; in the Second World War, a first-rank target. In the arms the river returns as a wavy blue band behind a silver castle, on Bergamo's gold and red.
