Sueglio

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 147 · Postal code: 23835

Sueglio lies in the Valvarrone, above the Lecco arm of Lake Como, and has a recent administrative peculiarity: when it was decided to merge the four comuni of the valley into one, it would not go along. From the first of January 2018 the other three — Introzzo, Vestreno and Tremenico — became the comune of Valvarrone, and Sueglio stayed as it was, with its barely one hundred and fifty inhabitants.

The church of San Martino, consecrated in 1583, tells instead the story of those who had left: the paintings that decorate it were paid for by the gifts of Sueglio people who had emigrated to the Veneto and Piedmont and went on thinking about home. The high altar and the pulpit, the latter of 1687, are carvings by the Fantoni family; the bell tower was raised between the end of the seventeenth century and 1705, and two years later an astronomical clock was fitted to it, a considerable luxury for a village of this size.
