Saints Peter and Paul and the Ritorno a Corenno
📅 Every year, on 29 June
Dervio celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June. Since 2015, «Ritorno a Corenno» has showcased the medieval hamlet of Corenno Plinio with a nativity scene exhibition.
The peninsula Dervio stands on was built by a torrent. The Varrone, which comes down from the Valvarrone and cuts the village in two, has for millennia eroded and carried rocky sediment and laid it on the bed of Lake Como, until it formed the fan on which the settlement grew. The name, on the other hand, is said to come from the Celtic derw, oak; the nineteenth-century idea of a derivation from the Greek Delphi, based on a passage of Strabo, is no longer believed.
Dervio appears for the first time in the will of Rotprando, the Lombard nobleman who on the third of March 814 left some goods to the oratory of San Quirico: it is the same document that also names Vercurago, at the end of the Lecco branch. In the hamlet of Corenno Plinio, perched around its castle and church, are the Andreani arks, three fourteenth-century tombs set on the façade and the forecourt of the parish church. In the twentieth century the village worked iron: the Redaelli firm, before 1925, came to employ more than eight hundred workers. Two thousand six hundred and eighty-one inhabitants in the province of Lecco.
