Galbiate

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,587 · Postal code: 23851

Galbiate stands on the saddle joining Monte Barro to the Colle di Brianza, above the lakes of Annone and Garlate. The place name contains the root Gal, traced either to the presence of Gauls or to the Celtic gala, meaning rock; the town's arms, for their part, show a rooster standing on a green mountain charged with an open castle.

Excavations on Monte Barro have brought to light a fortified complex with a courtyard and six towers: its date is unknown, but Pliny the Elder's Naturalis historia already records the Orobian settlement of Barra, and the fortress was later reused by the Lombards. Of the castle the De Ripa held for Milan in 1450 one tower survives. At San Michele stands a church that was never finished and still has no roof, which recent studies think began as a xenodochium, a shelter for travellers.
