Cornovecchio takes its name from the Latin cornu, a bend, and the bend is that of the Po, which flows past not far away. An old village with a castle, it was long disputed between Milan, Cremona, Piacenza and Lodi, passed in the twelfth century to the church of Milan, and in 1385 Gian Galeazzo Visconti granted it to the Bevilacqua. Earlier still, together with Corno Giovine, Meleti, Maleo and Maccastorna, it was one of the places where the Vismara family held the mero e misto imperio, that is, justice of their own.
It lost its independence under Napoleon, when it became a hamlet of Corno Giovine, and regained it with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia; in 1866 it absorbed in turn the municipality of Lardera. The parish church of the Purification of Mary was rebuilt and enlarged in 1772 after a period of neglect and keeps a sixteenth-century baptismal font and a statue of the Virgin placed there in 1750, while Villa Gattoni Cattaneo, of 1821, is neoclassical and stands in an English garden.
