Maleo

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,249 · Postal code: 26847

In 2015 the town council of Maleo approved a merger with neighbouring Corno Vecchio, but the last word fell to the inhabitants of the smaller village: on the fifteenth of November they went to vote and said no. In a century in which municipalities have been merged by decree and then split again, here it was a referendum that stopped the merger. Maleo has always been border country in any case: it stands at the top of the scarp overlooking the Adda, in the triangle between Lodi, Piacenza and Cremona, and its castle was destroyed in 1157 by the Cremonese and then rebuilt by those same men, and for two centuries it passed back and forth between Cremona and Milan.

In the coat of arms is an arm gripping a hammer. Local tradition says it recalls the first Christians of the place, who by striking a hammer on a metal plate called the faithful to common prayer; and from the Latin malleus the name of the village too is said to come. Outside the built-up area, in the fields below the scarp, stands the church of San Pietro Martire, which the people of Maleo call dei morti da bass: it is there because during the plague of 1630 it was decided to bury the dead far from the houses. Three thousand two hundred and forty-nine inhabitants in the province of Lodi.
