Feast of Saints Gervasio and Protasio
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of October
On the second Sunday of October Marudo, a municipality of 1,568 inhabitants in the province of Lodi, celebrates its patron saints Gervasio and Protasio.
Riso Scotti was born here. In 1860 a mill with a rice-husking plant began work at Marudo, and that was the first nucleus of what is today a multinational of the sector, later moved to Pavia and its province. Rice, after all, suits this clayey, fertile soil, and at Marudo they still grow it, mostly on owner-run farms. The village's name, on the other hand, would come simply from «ripe».
The administrative history is more eventful. After the tenth century Marudo belonged to the abbey of Santa Cristina da Ollona, of Lombard foundation, then to the monastery of San Pietro in Lodi and to other church bodies of that city; in the eighteenth century it passed to the Archinto and finally, in 1787, to the marquesses Cusani. In the Napoleonic age it was demoted to a hamlet of Caselle, and got its comune back with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. In 1869 it took in Castiraga da Reggio and Vidardo; but in 1902 the two hamlets left, and instead of each going its own way they joined each other, forming a new comune, Castiraga Vidardo. The parish church of Santi Gervaso e Protaso, of 1790, was built on the rubble of a small oratory: fragments of its frescoes remain inside.
