Caselle Lurani

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,100 · Postal code: 26853

Caselle simply means little houses, and it was too common a name: there were plenty of Caselle in Italy, and in 1863 the municipality added a second one to tell itself apart. It took the surname of its own lords, the Lurani, who had succeeded the Trivulzio in 1647 and who in 1691 had seen the fief raised to a county. Since then the village has borne the name of a family, like a person.

Of those lords the castle remains, a mighty construction turned in the second half of the seventeenth century into a lordly residence and known today as Palazzo Lurani; the parish church of Santa Caterina is of sixteenth-century origin, and at Calvenzano there is the church of the Nativity of Mary. In the Napoleonic age Marudo had been joined to the municipality, and regained its autonomy with the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. Between 1881 and 1931 the Cusanina district had a stop on the Melegnano-Sant'Angelo Lodigiano tramway. Today farming still counts, but most of those who work go to Milan. Three thousand one hundred inhabitants in the province of Lodi.
