The Purification of Mary and the World in the Nativity Scene
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of October
Salerano sul Lambro celebrates the Purification of Mary on the third Sunday of October, next to the Castello Vistarini.
The name Salerano comes from salt. The most widely accepted explanation traces it to the boats that came up the Lambro and found a landing place here to unload and pay the toll: a village named not for what it produced, but for what passed by and stopped to pay. The place first appears in 1122 as Salarianum vicus, and in 1159 Frederick Barbarossa granted it to the Pavia monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. Then came the feudal lords: the Capitanei di Salerano and, from 1307 to 1685, the Vistarini, one of the most powerful families in the Lodi area.
The Vistarini were followed by the Sommariva, who went on signing themselves marquises of Salerano until the first decade of the twentieth century, when nothing feudal was left. In 1863 the municipality added the river's name to its own so as not to be confused with Salerano Canavese, in Piedmont. The last echo of the old passing traffic died away in the twentieth century: between 1881 and 1931 the village had a stop on the Melegnano-Sant'Angelo Lodigiano tramway, later dismantled. Today Salerano sul Lambro has just over two thousand six hundred inhabitants.
