Pieve Fissiraga

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,604 · Postal code: 26854

The village that gives the comune its name is today a farmstead. Fissiraga is first recorded in 1211, but in 1841 it was joined to Orgnaga and became one of its hamlets; and when in 1879 the new comune was created — putting together Orgnaga, Pezzolo de' Codazzi and Triulzina, plus Andreola and Malguzzana detached from Campolungo — the name chosen was precisely that of the place which had lost its autonomy. Old Fissiraga, meanwhile, has stayed what it had become: a simple farmstead among the fields.

Today's built-up centre, on the other hand, grew around a church that stood alone. The parish church — the ancient pieve from which the first half of the name comes — was planted in the middle of the countryside, a few hundred metres north of old Fissiraga, and it was there that in the twentieth century the village took shape. Then, from the nineteen-nineties, it grew again along the road between Lodi and Sant'Angelo, near the motorway junction, where between cascina Orgnaga and Pezzolo dei Codazzi a large residential, craft and commercial area has sprung up.
