Saint Andrew, patron of Massalengo
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of October
Massalengo celebrates Saint Andrew on the first Sunday of October, in the church dedicated to him.
In 1661 the fief was assigned to a count from Piacenza whose name was Pietro Massalenghi. The village, which had been called Massalengo for centuries, thus found itself with a lord bearing its own name, and the sources do not say whether this is a coincidence or whether the surname came from here. Before him there had been the Benedictine monks of San Pietro in Lodi Vecchio, who held it from the ninth century, then the Salerano family after the year 1000 and from 1224 the Capitanei of Cornegliano Laudense; after him, in 1756, Antonio Vigoni. A country village passed from hand to hand for nine hundred years.
Four thousand one hundred and ninety-two inhabitants in the province of Lodi. In the Napoleonic period Lanfroia and Motta Vigana were attached to it, and became independent again under the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom; Lanfroia then ended up inside Motta Vigana in 1841, and Motta Vigana inside Massalengo in 1879, for good. In the middle of the village stands the Cascina Grande, the largest of the old farms, and attached to it the manor house of the Premoli family, built in Liberty style in 1885 within a broad garden: the master's house grafted directly onto the cattle sheds. The parish church of Sant'Andrea dates from 1621.
