Borgo San Giovanni

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,213 · Postal code: 26851

This village has changed its name twice in eighteen years and has never gone home. Recorded in 1034 as Cozemano, for centuries it was called Cazzimani, that is Ca' de Zimani, the house of the Zimani; in 1929 the name disappeared and the comune became Borgo Littorio. In 1947, with fascism over, the old sign could have gone back up: instead a third name was chosen, Borgo San Giovanni, that of the patron saint of the parish.

Little is left of the older history: in the Middle Ages part of the territory was a fief of archbishop Ariberto da Intimiano, from 1648 the whole of it passed to the Masserani, and in 1865 the comune took in Ca' dell'Acqua and Guazzina. Today the parish church is neo-Gothic, the fields and the cattle sheds are still there, and people work between Lodi and Milan.
