Cornegliano Laudense

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,838 · Postal code: 26854

The municipality is called Cornegliano but the town hall is somewhere else. In 1879, when the municipality of Campolungo was joined to it, the seat was moved to the hamlet of Muzza Sant'Angelo, which has since grown far more than the chief town: it lies on the road between Lodi and Pavia, near the exit of the Autostrada del Sole, and in the nineteen-seventies it filled up with houses. Today the territory is made of three distinct pieces: the old farming village of Cornegliano, populous Muzza Sant'Angelo and the trading estate of Codognino.

The village football team is called Superga Muzza, and the name is no accident: it was born in 1949, right after the death of the Grande Torino players in the air crash. In the parish church of San Callisto, already mentioned in documents of 1261, there survive a fresco with a Madonna between two saints and a Nativity of the late fifteenth century. In the Sesmones farmstead, the old sources say, there was a hospital around the year one thousand. Two thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight inhabitants in the province of Lodi.
