Asola

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 10,077 · Postal code: 46041

Asola is a diminutive of the Latin ansa, the bend of the Chiese where the town was founded. In 1440 it gave itself to Venice of its own accord and became a border fortress: in 1516 imperial armies led by Maximilian I besieged it without success, because the Venetian provveditore Francesco Contarini ran the defence so well that they withdrew. Tintoretto later painted the episode.

Little survives of the quadrilateral fortress with its fourteen cylindrical towers, moat and earthworks: a few stretches of wall inside later buildings and the tower on viale Brescia. Venice left the Loggia Veneta, opened in 1610 at the corner of the town hall. The arms carry a silver lion crowned in the antique manner on red, with the external ornaments of a city, a title Asola holds.
