Borgo Mantovano

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,619 · Postal code: 46036

Borgo Mantovano came into being on the first of January 2018 from the merger of Pieve di Coriano, Revere and Villa Poma, but rather than a birth it was a return: until 1816 those three villages were a single comune, together with Quingentole and Schivenoglia, and it was the Austrians of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia who broke the old municipality apart along the boundaries of its five parishes. At the referendum of 2017 the voters also had to settle the name, choosing between Borgo Mantovano, Borgoltrepò and Riva Mantovana.

The town hall is at Revere, where between 1450 and 1460 the Gonzaga built a ducal palace that now houses the Museum of the Po; the museum also has a floating annexe, a boat mill moored on the river. At Pieve di Coriano the church of Santa Maria Assunta goes back to 1082, and at Villa Poma the house of Carlo Poma is preserved, one of the martyrs of Belfiore. The arms of the new comune divide the shield into three bands and place in each the figures of one of the three old coats of arms.
